A peaceful place in nature, shaped by a passion for simple living and meaningful stays
Birkelund is a former farmhouse from 1850, set in the nature of North Bornholm. Today, it offers five holiday apartments in calm surroundings, where nature, space and simplicity define the stay.
Here, everyday life slows down – and the focus shifts to being outdoors, enjoying the quiet and spending time together.
The vision is to create a place where guests can stay close to nature – in simple, comfortable surroundings that invite both activity and relaxation.
It is about finding a balance between outdoor life and the good, quiet moments. This balance is at the heart of Birkelund. It is also reflected in her other project, Løvtag Bornholm – a treetop hotel located in the Birkelund forest.
Guests are welcome to combine their stay with one or more nights at Løvtag. More information can be found on the Løvtag website.
Birkelund is created and owned by Nanna, who has worked with nature tourism and sustainable development for more than 25 years. Inspired by a childhood in Costa Rica, she has a deep connection to the outdoors, combined with an appreciation for comfort and the simple pleasures of everyday life.
Nanna lives in Copenhagen with her husband, close to their two adult children, and is therefore not always present on Bornholm. The daily hosts at Birkelund are Kolja and Yvo, who welcome guests and take care of the place.
Yvo and Kolja have welcomed guests to Birkelund since the autumn of 2025. Originally from Hamburg, they have long felt a strong connection to Bornholm – a place they first visited as a family many years ago, and which gradually became a dream for a new chapter in life.
Together with their three children and their dog, Mandarino, they now call the island home. With a shared love for nature, outdoor life and meaningful everyday moments, they create a warm and relaxed atmosphere for guests at Birkelund.
Kolja has a background as a graphic and industrial designer, most recently working with editorial design and running his own design agency. Yvo is a trained seamstress and clothing engineer, and has spent many years running a shop in Hamburg with Scandinavian home accessories and a sewing school.
They both appreciate the changing seasons on Bornholm – from lively summer days to the quiet and calm of winter – and look forward to welcoming guests to Birkelund.
Birkelund is set in a varied landscape of forest, small lakes and open fields. Wildlife, birds and changing seasons are part of the experience.
The surroundings invite you to explore – or simply to sit back and enjoy the calm atmosphere.
At Birkelund, we work with a simple and thoughtful approach to sustainability – from energy use to everyday choices.
It is not about perfection, but about making conscious decisions and developing the place over time.
Birkelund was once a working farmhouse, and traces of its history are still part of the place today.
Over time, it has been carefully adapted, preserving its character while creating a peaceful setting for modern stays.
A peaceful stay in nature, with space to slow down and enjoy Bornholm at your own pace.
